In The Beginning
Posted By jayna on September 30, 2009
It was a well thought out plan. Really. In the beginning, it was. Head out of town, do a little hiking, a little camping, spend a couple of days at a resort for free. Solid plans made totally last minute. The cheapest vacation possible for the family scrimping by. What could possibly go wrong?
Well . . .
The toddler got strep throat.
Our air pump for the mattress disappeared.
We learned that sick toddlers don’t do 7 hours in a car very well.
Nor do 4 month olds.
Our campsite had bear poop in it. Fresh bear poop. Lots of it.
Toddlers have to go pee in the middle of the night. Out of the tent. Where there might be bears.
Toddlers are afraid of bears.
And of campfires.
And the dark.
The weatherman lied. It wasn’t 57 at night. It was in the low 40s with gusting wind.
Our tent is an awesome tent. But it doesn’t stay very warm in the 40s with gusting wind.
Two adults, one toddler and one 4 month old CAN fit on a queen air mattress, zipped into two sleeping bags, but it isn’t pretty.
Even less so when the ground slopes to one corner of the tent.
And . . . despite almost no sleep, toddlers will be chipper and cheerful and peppy, much to the dismay of two shivering, sick and bleary-eyed parents. They will love camping and be completely ready to do it again.

This is a memory you will look back on and laugh about :) I got up and turned on the heat this morning and it is 50 outside but 40's=burrrrrr!!!
You're more adventurous than I am. I'm glad that you're having a good time despite all the camping horrors.
That is amazing. I still have recurring nightmares about camping as a kid, so you are most definitely doing something right.
Oh you guys are brave! Sounds sooooo eventful :)
I feel cold and tired just reading this.
If nothing else, the trip garnered a super cute picture of you and the girls!
(That doesn't really help, does it?!)
Woman, you are a trooper. I would have started crying two hours into the car ride and called it quits.
Glad you had a good time, despite everything else!
