Oh, Nothing Really . . . Just Buying A House

Posted By on May 12, 2011

On Wednesday of last week, the husband called me at the crack of dawn – long before any of us girls were to wake up. He had just gotten to work and there it was. The email. After NINE months of yes, no, maybe and a ton of false starts, he was finally calling to tell me that we were moving. For nine months, we’ve been house-hunting and then not. Starting to pack and then not. Looking for schools and doctors and churches and then not. Now, we are. We are packing and searching and GOING. GOING to our mountains and our fresh air and our long awaited new city. GOING away from the traffic and the grit and the hugeness and the busy, busy, busy that this DC-Baltimore corridor is. GOING to. GOING away.

GOING away fast.

On Tuesday, we drove down to search for a rental house. On Wednesday, we signed the dotted line to make an offer to buy a house. On Thursday, we signed the rest of our lives away to actually buy that house.

This. Is. Real.

I’m not sure when things are going to stop spinning. The husband starts work on Monday. For the next 7 months, we’re guaranteed to be in Charlottesville. After that, we could stay or we could go. Not one single person knows right now. And yet, we’re buying a house.

*Hi. If you’re new here, welcome. I’d like to take a minute and let you in on a little secret. We’re crazy. A lot crazy.*

But, this house isn’t just any house. It’s an adorably sweet Cape Cod with a lush yard in a ridiculously desirable neighborhood. A neighborhood where we couldn’t find a single rental that was livable because they just go that fast. It’s a house that swept us off our feet and invited us in. A house that would make a perfect rental someday after we move on. We stood in the kitchen, both saw the possible future and jumped in with both feet. We may stay or we may go, and either way, this is the house. The house for us, and then the house for someone else . . .

Here. We. Go.

This is going to be a wild ride, y’all.
