The Finished Girls’ Room: Part 2
Posted By jayna on October 7, 2011
After we got the girls their new beds, and experimented with some artwork to go over them, it was time to turn to one of the other blank walls.
Directly across from the foot of E’s bed, is their dresser. Found (scored, actually) at the same wonderfully musty antique store as the pink washstand, it was in equally rough shape. A bit of sanding and a few coats of paint later, and we ended up with a cheerful and functional piece of furniture. The drawers may stick on a regular basis, but considering that the total investment was under $20, that’s a small price to pay. A trip to Anthropologie to pick out some fun new knobs ended up costing us more than double, however . . .
Once the dresser was in, it was time to fill up that wall. Inspired by Etsy and, of course, Pinterest, we ended up with a few pieces that I love. The center one is a 12″x12″ canvas, with die-cut flowers – from paint chip samples – glued on to it. I originally was going to flip up the edges so each flower stood out, but ended up liking the clean look of them flat better. All of the other graphics were made by me, late into sleepless nights. I had been wishing I could just order the sets from Etsy, but never saw quite the colors I was looking for. This way, I matched each color to the room and added my own touches. Ten times better, I think. I have the name poster template all ready to be filled in whenever this next one decides to make an appearance.
And, that is how it stayed for a few weeks. I knew exactly what I wanted for the center spot, but apparently round picture frames that don’t cost a million dollars are hard to come by in the local second hand market. So, I searched and searched . . .

Eventually, a morning of wandering around Target helped this sucker fall into my lap. Marked down on clearance and nearly the perfect size, I snatched it up, ready to be done with my search.

A can of white spray paint, a can of chalkboard spray paint and ta-daaa!
(I’m still wavering on how harsh the black is, and wondering if I should have just done my own tinted chalkboard paint to match better. It is getting a lot of use already though.)

The girls helped add the finishing touches to the top of the dresser, and surprisingly, it has stayed that way ever since.

The blocks are from Etsy, long, long ago. Frames are from Ikea. Chalkboard frame is from Target. Graphics are simply 8×10 or 12×18 photo prints cut down to fit the frames.
(If anyone would like the pdf files for the graphics, I’m happy to share!)

It looks so cute! I sort of like the harshness of the black…it balances it out all the light tones. LOVE the green dresser. LOVE!
I’d love a copy of those PDF’s… I loved the idea on Pinterest and was going to make a set of my own but your colors are perfect for our new baby’s room!
Great job, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the dresser knobs.
No problem – send me an email at theyankeedrawl@yahoo.com and I’ll get them to you!
So pretty! You did such a great job on everything.
I LOVE the room! It all came together so perfectly. I would also like the pdf file.. thank you so much :)
Hi there. Came over from Burgh Baby. The girls room is really pretty. I love Anthropologie for knobs! I just bought the silver mercury for my kitchen. Next time you need a round frame for fabric try a embroidery hoop. That might work.
